In 2017, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Nursing Services (ONS) recognized the need to increase the cadence of disseminating standardized implementation of evidence-based practice (EBP). Fortunately, the ONS Director of Research and EBP was invited to the Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice’s ( the Fuld ) inaugural National Summit at The Ohio State University. Subsequently, members of the national nursing leadership team attended an immersion at the Dayton, Ohio Veterans Affairs Medical Center. This exposure and experience ignited a leadership commitment to fund a strategic initiative to develop EBP mentors at each VA medical center site in collaboration with the Fuld.

Study: Nurses' Physical, Mental Health Connected To Preventable Medical Errors
Find Original Press Release Here
COLUMBUS, Ohio – A study led by The Ohio State University College of Nursing finds that critical care nurses in poor physical and mental health reported significantly more medical errors than nurses in better health. The study, which was conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic, also found that “nurses who perceived that their worksite was very supportive of their well-being were twice as likely to have better physical health.” Study findings published today in the American Journal of Critical Care. “It’s critically important that we understand some of the root causes that lead to those errors and do everything we can to prevent them,” lead author Bernadette Melnyk said. She serves as vice president for health promotion, chief wellness officer and dean of the College of Nursing at Ohio State. The authors quoted research on the prevalence of stress, anxiety, depression and burnout symptoms among critical care nurses as a basis for examining the potential correlation between well-being and medical errors. The study surveyed nearly 800 members of the...EBP Implementation and Sustainability Toolkit Released to EBP HQ Members

Clinician burnout: A mental health 'pandemic within a pandemic'
"For the last several months, health care workers have rightfully been hailed as heroes. They have worked tirelessly through the COVID-19 pandemic, putting themselves in harm’s way to deliver outstanding care to patients. Health care workers appreciate videos and personal messages of thanks they receive. However, the best way to thank our nation’s clinicians is to provide resources and programming that support improved quality of life with the goal of reducing clinician burnout, a critical problem that I call the mental health 'pandemic within the pandemic.'” - quote from article. Check out this article from the journal Healio penned by the Fuld Institute for EBP's own Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk.
