    About The EBP Certification

    The Helene Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare is recognized by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) to offer an EBP Certification to qualified professionals who work in practice or education. This certification recognizes demonstrated expertise in EBP and denotes that the successful applicant has completed the required education component. Applicants will need to provide documentation of advance intensive continuing education or graduate study in EBP.

    Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk is vice president for health promotion, university chief wellness officer, dean and professor at the College of Nursing, professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the College of Medicine, and founder and executive director at the Fuld Institute for EBP, all at The Ohio State University. Melnyk earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from West Virginia University, her Master of Science degree with a specialization in nursing care of children and pediatric nurse practitioner from the University of Pittsburgh and her PhD in clinical research from the University of Rochester where she also completed her post-master’s certificate as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. She is a nationally/internationally recognized expert in evidence-based practice, intervention research, child and adolescent mental health, and health and wellness and is a frequent keynote speaker at national and international conferences on these topics.

    Melnyk has led the EBP movement in nursing for the last two decades and consulted with hundreds of healthcare systems and colleges throughout the nation and globe on how to improve quality of care and patient outcomes through implementing and sustaining evidence-based practice. Her record includes over $33 million of sponsored funding from federal agencies and foundations as principal investigator and over 400 publications. She is co-editor of seven books, including Evidence-based Practice in Nursing & Healthcare: A Guide to Best Practice (4th Ed), and Implementing the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Competencies in Healthcare: A Practical Guide for Improving Quality, Safety, and Outcomes, both American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award winners.

    Melnyk is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medicine, the American Academy of Nursing, the National Academies of Practice and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She served a four-year term on the 16-member United States Preventive Services Task Force and the National Institutes of Health’s National Advisory Council for Nursing Research. She currently serves as a member of the National Quality Forum’s (NQF) Behavioral Health Standing Committee. Melnyk is editor of the journal, Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing, a board member of the National Forum for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and a member of the National Academy of Medicine’s Action Collaborative on Clinician Well-being and Resilience.

    Melnyk has received numerous national and international awards, including the Audrey Hepburn Award, Mary Tolle Wright Excellence in Leadership Award,  the International Nursing Research Hall of Fame Award from Sigma Theta Tau International, the Jessie Scott Award from the American Nurses Association, the Midwest Nursing Research Society Senior Scientist award, the NIH/National Institute of Nursing Research’s inaugural director’s lectureship award and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Lifetime Achievement Award. She also has been recognized as an Edge Runner three times by the American Academy of Nursing for founding and directing the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners’ KySS child and adolescent mental health program, her COPE Program for parents of preterm infants and critically ill children and her COPE programs for decreasing depression/anxiety and improving healthy lifestyle behaviors in children, teens and young adults.

    Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk is currently the Associate Vice President for Health Promotion, University Chief Wellness Officer, and Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at The Ohio State University.  She also is a professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Ohio State’s College of Medicine. Dr. Melnyk is an elected fellow of the Institute of Medicine, the American Academy of Nursing, the National Academies of Practice, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.     Dr. Melnyk recently founded the National Interprofessional Education and Practice Collaborative to advance the Department of Health and Human Services’ Million Hearts initiative to prevent one million heart attacks and strokes by 2017. She also created and chaired the first National Summit on Building Healthy Academic Communities in April of 2013 that drew over 300 leaders from 93 Universities and colleges across the U.S. and founded the National Consortium for Building Healthy Academic Communities, a collaborative effort to improve population health in the nation’s institutions of higher learning.

Her publications include co-authorship of multiple studies that have had a dramatic impact on the current body of knowledge about evidence-based practice and influenced strategic imperatives to address new challengesShe also contributed as a lead author in the American Journal of Nursing EBP Series, which received the Sigma Theta Tau Publication Award for 2011.

    She serves as assistant editor of Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing and is the editor of the column “Implementing and Sustaining EBP in Real-World Healthcare Settings,” which features best evidence-based strategies and innovative ideas on how to promote and sustain evidence-based practices and cultures in clinical organizations.

    Gallagher-Ford’s research is focused on the science behind evidence-based practice, with particular focus on the influence of nurse leaders and contextual issues. She was inducted into the National Academies of Practice and the Nursing Academy as a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow in 2013 and the American Academy of Nursing as a fellow in 2017.

  • Cindy Zellefrow DNP, MSEd, RN, LSN, PHNA-BC | Evidence-based Practice (CH)
    Academic Core Director, Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing

    Cindy Zellefrowis assistant professor of clinical nursing at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and director of the Academic Core. Zellefrow has traveled the world presenting, teaching, consulting and collaborating with faculty about various aspects of EBP in academia and practice. She is actively engaged in research and publishing about various aspects of EBP, including EBP teaching, integration and competency. In addition to articles on various aspects of EBP, she is a contributing author to several textbooks about EBP, and has created online interactive EBP education resources for several textbooks as well. Zellefrow’s research interests include various aspects of EBP in both academic and clinical settings as well as wellness in newly graduated nurses.  As faculty in the OSU College of Nursing, she teaches EBP, mentors faculty around EBP integration and has led re-imagination of the EBP courses and EBP integration across curricula. Her clinical practice background includes 15 years in adult ICU, ED and critical care transport and 15 years in school nursing.

    Implementation Science Core Director

    Sharon Tucker is director of the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program Nurse Executive Track and holder of the Grayce Sills Endowed Professor in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and director of the Implementation Science Core at the Fuld Institute for EBP. A board (ANCC) certified adult psychiatric mental health clinical nurse specialist, licensed APRN-CNS in Ohio and behavioral researcher, Tucker focuses on behavioral interventions to promote health and wellness, prevent disease and reduce stress and risks among families, particularly among working mothers and children.     In addition to being recognized as an expert in health and wellness interventions and strategies, Tucker is a known leader in evidence-based practice (EBP), implementation science, and quality improvement. She served as director of research, EBP and quality for two Magnet-designated, large hospitals in academic medical centers (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and Mayo Clinic) for 15 years prior to joining OSU in 2017. Research and EBP outcomes were recognized by the Magnet surveyors as exemplary for both hospitals. Tucker led her team at the University of Iowa (UI) Hospitals and Clinics in the writing of a successful competitive application for the prestigious Magnet Prize, which was awarded in 2014 for their legacy work in EBP. In partnership with the UI College of Nursing, they were also awarded recognitions for collaborative partnerships by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing in 2014 and the Midwest Nursing Research Society in 2017.

    Tucker developed and published the Evidence-Based Practice Self-Efficacy Scale in 2009, and since tracking its use beginning in 2013, the scale has been requested over 1340 times from 40 countries. She is co-author of two books on EBP, one published in 2008 titled Evidence-based nursing care guidelines: Medical-surgical interventions (St. Louis, MO: Mosby Elsevier) and one published in 2018 titled Evidence-based practice in action: Comprehensive strategies, tools and tips from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (Indianapolis: Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing). She has written multiple papers and chapters on EBP and implementation aimed to advance safe, high quality clinical nursing care.

    Tucker earned her BSN from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota, a MSN from the University of Wisconsin at Eau Claire, and her PhD in Nursing from Rush University in Chicago. She is an alumna of the Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellows Program (2007 Cohort) and was elected as a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 2014 and as a fellow to the National Academies of Practice in 2019. In addition, Tucker has been on the Board of Directors for the Midwest Nursing Research Society since 2015, currently serving as treasurer, and is the Chair of the Health Behavior Expert Panel of the American Academy of Nursing. She is the associate editor of Worldviews in Evidence-based Nursing, a member of the Advisory Board for Evidence-Based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare 4th Edition (Melynk & Fineout-Overholt), and appointed member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of School Nursing. She regularly reviews conference abstracts, grants and manuscripts for several interdisciplinary and nursing journals.

Her interventions include cognitive behavioral interventions with a focus on cognitive behavioral skills building techniques, which she teaches and studies. Presently serving as co-investigator in a NIH-funded RO1, she is a recognized expert in cognitive behavioral research and trains professionals nationally to deliver the evidence-based program, MINDSTRONG™.

    Hoying is a senior executive leader with 25 years in healthcare administration serving in a variety of high level diverse leadership experiences including chief nursing officer, health system executive and administrative lead for evidence-based nursing practice and research. As an executive nursing leader, she led the team in a successful competitive application for the coveted designated Magnet Recognition Award for Excellence in Nursing Service (awarded by American Nurses Credentialing Center –ANCC). In addition, Hoying led a high-performing team to pursue evidence-based practice and receive trauma designation, becoming the first Level III Trauma designated hospital in the state of Ohio.

    Hoying has published in peer reviewed journals and has presented nationally and internationally on cognitive behavior research. She regularly reviews manuscripts for several peer-reviewed journals and conference abstracts. Hoying earned her BSN from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio, and a MS and a PhD in Nursing from The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

    Hoying is enthusiastic about her role as director of the Consumer Core. She has served as a leader in delivering evidence-based health care and meeting consumer expectations for care as well as translating research to evidence-based practice for consumers.

  • Kevin P. Browne DNP, RN, CNS, CCRN
    Senior Vice President Patient Care Services and Chief Nurse Executive
    St. Joseph’s Health, Paterson, NJ

    Kevin P. Browne has been a nurse for 34 years. A member of the senior executive leadership team at St. Joseph’s Health in Paterson, New Jersey, Browne is the senior vice president patient care services and chief nurse executive. Browne is responsible for Nursing Services, Respiratory Care Services and Infection Control across the enterprise. Before this position Browne was the vice president, deputy chief nursing officer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) where he helped ensure the organizational culture was one that is evidence-based. Browne holds appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor, State University of New York - Stony Brook University School of Nursing, and Clinical Professor/Research Associate, Lienhard School of Nursing, College of Health Professions at Pace University. Browne is a Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine. 

    Browne achieved a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from St. Peter’s University in December 2018.  Browne’s doctoral work focused on a new phenomenon known as practice drift. He is an expert in evidence-based practice methods, cultivating a spirit of inquiry internationally.

    Victor M. Montori, MD is a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. An endocrinologist and health services researcher, Dr. Montori is the author of more than 600 peer‐reviewed publications and is among the top 1% of researchers with most cited papers in clinical medicine worldwide in the last decade. He is a Senior Advisor in the Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement at the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research of the US Government. He also serves in the Editorial Advisory Board of the BMJ, and as Director of Late Stage Translational Research at the Mayo Center for Clinical and Translational Science. He is a recognized expert in evidence‐based medicine and shared decision making, and developer of the concept of minimally disruptive medicine. He works in Rochester, Minnesota, at Mayo Clinic's KER Unit, to advance person‐centered care for patients with diabetes and other chronic conditions. He recently published the book Why We Revolt – a Patient Revolution for Careful and Kind Care.

    Gale Adcock describes herself as a nurse by grace, a North Carolinian by choice and a politician by necessity.   

    She received a BSN from ECU and an MSN from UNC Chapel Hill. In addition to being a primary care clinician, she is a writer, national speaker, advocate and activist. She is adjunct faculty at Duke, East Carolina University and UNC-Chapel Hill. She is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.    

    Adcock is Chief Health Officer for global software company SAS Institute where she leads a 58 member staff to deliver free primary care to 14,000 SAS employees and family members of all ages. Adcock’s multidisciplinary team consistently helps SAS stay in Fortune’s annual 100 Best Places to Work and saves the company $8 Million a year in avoided medical claims costs.  

    Adcock served 7 years on the Cary Town Council before running in a competitive race for the NC House in 2014. She is now serving her third term. She is the first advanced practice registered nurse ever elected to the North Carolina General Assembly.  

    Representative Adcock has been recognized by the NC League of Conservation Voters for her pro-environment record, by Democracy North Carolina for transparency in campaign finance reporting, as a ‘Champion for Health’ by the NC Alliance for Health and as the 2017 ‘Legislator of the Year’ by the NC Nurses Association.    

    She is recognized as a common sense leader, a health care expert and a local government advocate who successfully works across the aisle.  


          
     
  • Karey M. Dufour DNP, RN, MA, ACNS-BC, CEN, EBP-C, USAF Col (ret)
    Assistant Director Clinical Core

    Karey Dufour is an assistant director of the Clinical Core. She taught and served as a facilitator for the EBP immersion since 2014 and has conducted or mentored several evidence-based practice initiatives during her Air Force career. She taught and served as a facilitator for the EBP immersion since 2014 and has conducted or mentored several evidence-based practice initiatives during her Air Force career.     National Program Manager for EBP

    Colleen Walsh-Irwin is the national program manager for evidence-based practice for the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Office of Nursing Services in Washington, DC. She is responsible for assisting facilities to improve their evidence-based practice programs and practices as a nurse practitioner.  She has been an adult nurse practitioner in cardiology for the VA for over 26 years. She has developed cardiac guidelines for the VA that have been implemented nationally across the healthcare system. Walsh-Irwin serves on multiple committees for the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and the American College of Cardiology. She holds a Certificate of Specialization in Leadership and Management from Harvard Business School Online, is an Associate of the American College of Cardiology and a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).  Walsh-Irwin is an adjunct clinical assistant professor at Stony Brook University School of Nursing. In addition to being a speaker locally, regionally and nationally, she is well published in nursing textbooks and peer reviewed journals.     Beckett has mentored and supported students, medical and nursing residents, healthcare providers and researchers across the spectrum of experience in clinical research and EBP for over 18 years.     Beckett served as the Northern Arizona Healthcare (NAH) coordinator for THRIVE (Translating Health Research Initiatives for Population Health) collaborations between clinicians and researchers across NAH and Northern Arizona University (NAU) for 5 years. In this role, she matched clinicians with researchers to respond to requests for proposals from intermural and extramural funding sources. She managed research and EBP funds for pilot and preliminary studies focusing on population health and patient outcomes research.

    Bindu Thomas is the technology & research coordinator for the Fuld Institute for EBP. In her role she coordinates the technology needs for all the Fuld Institute for EBP programs including clinical and academic immersions. Thomas also provides support to conduct research projects related to EBP, including planning, implementation and evaluation of each project.   • Linda Connor PhD, RN, CPN | Evidence-based Practice (CH)
    Program Director

    Linda Connor is assistant professor of clinical practice at The Ohio State University College of Nursing and program director at the Fuld Institute for EBP. She graduated from the University of Massachusetts Boston in May 2017, earning a nursing PhD with a focus in health policy. She has over 40 years of acute care experience in both pediatric and adult critical care, emergency room trauma and perioperative nursing. Prior to moving to Columbus, Ohio, Connor was a nurse at Boston Children's Hospital in the Perioperative Program where she mentored staff nurses in evidenced-based practice (EBP), professional advancement and performed pre-anesthesia chart reviews for day-surgery patients. Connor serves as a facilitator for the Fuld Institute for EBP immersions.   

    Connor is a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA), Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI), Midwest Nursing Research Society and the Society of Pediatric Nursing (SPN). Her previous areas of research include pediatric sedation, quality care and family-centered care. For the past 18 years, she has educated staff nurses and student nurses about the EBP process. More recently, Connor and a colleague developed an instrument for measuring nurses’ knowledge, values and implementation of EBP. The results of this work have been published in the Journal of Nursing Education and Practice, 2016, and Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing, 2017. This instrument was included in her dissertation for further psychometric testing in association with health policies. Her current goal is to expand her research in the areas of EBP and policy.

    As program manager, Susan Potter designs and develops projects and programs to support the core operations of the Fuld Institute for Evidence-based Practice including large, long-term and multilevel projects, national events, international agreements and new programs. Potter received a bachelor’s degree in French and Spanish with a minor in Political Science from Capital University in Columbus, OH.     Senior Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive

    Penelope F. Gorsuch is assistant professor of clinical practice, The Ohio State University College of Nursing, and senior vice president and chief nurse executive, Summa Health System in Akron, Ohio. Gorsuch is a retired colonel from the United States Air Force (USAF) with over 28 years of service in numerous clinical and leadership positions. She has also served as the clinical core assistant director for the Fuld Insitute for EBP, and the associate director of Patient Care Services/nurse executive for the Dayton Veteran’s Administration (VA) Medical Center in Ohio. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has recognized Gorsuch as a content expert in evidence-based practice (EBP) and she has earned the designation of Evidence-based Practice Certificate Holder from the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification. From 2014-2017, she was adjunct faculty for Wright State University College of Nursing and served on their Academic and Strategic Planning Board.     Kathleen Williamson is the president and academic dean at Mount Carmel College of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio. Williamson is the chief academic officer of the College.     Nancy G. Houlihan is the president of the Oncology Nursing Society, the premier oncology nursing organization representing oncology nurses in the US and globally and dedicated to the evidence-based care standards for oncology nursing practice. She has been a certified oncology nurse for over thirty years, with particular expertise in evidence-based management of cancer treatment and disease-related side effects and care of cancer survivors. In her former role as director of nursing, EBP at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) in New York she partnered with the Fuld Institute for EBP in implementation of an extensive program at MSK to ensure the delivery of evidence-based care across the organization. She has over a decade of experience working with leadership teams in health systems to apply research findings and EBP recommendations to practice and create infrastructures for ongoing monitoring of outcomes. McNett has led numerous interdisciplinary task forces to integrate key components of research, evidence-based practice and quality improvement initiatives into healthcare settings.  

    McNett’s work has earned her several awards including fellowship distinction from the Neurocritical Care Society, the Ohio Nurse of the Year Award for Research, Excellence in Performance from Sigma Theta Tau International, multiple Presidential Citations from the Neurocritical Care Society, several writing awards and consecutive recognitions for exemplar programs of research and EBP from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program.     Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD

    Amanda Shrout is the director of clinical excellence at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. She leads and empowers a team of master’s degree-prepared registered nurses focusing on the implementation of evidence-based practice to improve clinical and organizational outcomes. Shrout is also responsible for clinical education, professional development and the Nurse Residency Program.     Cochrane Affiliate Program Director

    Dónal P. O’Mathúna is associate professor at The Ohio State University College of Nursing, serves as Cochrane Affiliate program director at the Fuld Institute for EBP and teaches in The Ohio State University Center for Bioethics. His degrees are in pharmacy and ethics, with research interests focused on both evidence-based practice (EBP) and healthcare ethics. His EBP activities have focused on systematic reviews with Cochrane and he is a member of the Cochrane US Network Executive Committee. O’Mathúna has conducted systematic review training in Ireland, the UK and the USA, and is co-author on a number of systematic reviews in the Cochrane Library. His ethics research has focused on disasters, pandemics and humanitarian crises. He is co-editor of Ethical Issues in Covert, Security and Surveillance Research (Emerald, 2021), Disasters: Core Concepts and Ethical Issues (Springer, 2018) and other edited books. O’Mathúna is the principal investigator on funded research projects examining research ethics in the context of disasters and humanitarian crises. He is also a member of research teams examining ethical issues and moral injury experienced by US nurses during COVID-19. He has contributed to ethics initiatives and guidelines with the World Health Organization, UNICEF and other international agencies. He has spoken and published widely, including peer-reviewed articles in Bioethics, BMC Medical Ethics, Journal of Evidence-Based Medicine and Worldviews on Evidence-based Nursing.

    Sacred Heart University, Fairfield, CT

    Kerry Milner is a professor in the Davis & Henley College of Nursing at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut where she teaches in the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Family Nurse Practitioner Program. She has had several principal investigator and co-principal investigator grants from Sacred Heart University to conduct research to improve the care of patients with cardiovascular disease and explore evidence-based practices in nursing and health professions faculty. Milner has received funding for research on national visiting practices in adult intensive care units from the Helen Fuld Health Trust National Institute for Evidence-based Practice in Nursing and Healthcare, and a multi-million-dollar grant from HRSA to address the opioid crisis in Connecticut. She is a reviewer for the EBP certificate program. These diverse activities are unified by an appreciation for the power of interdisciplinary EBP, QI, and research teams to advance patient and family care.     Assistant Professor of Clinical Nursing, Assistant Dean for Baccalaureate Programs
    The Ohio State University College of Nursing, Columbus, OH

    Wendy Bowles serves in the role of the assistant dean for Baccalaureate Programs at The Ohio State University College of Nursing. She has embraced evidence-based practice since her early days as a nurse over twenty years ago and subsequently as a nurse practitioner. Bowles began her journey in nursing education in 2005 and realized the importance of educating future nurses for current practice environments relying on the most current evidence for decision making. She is committed to advancing the science of evidence-based pedagogies of teaching and learning in nursing education. Her research includes work with alternative pedagogies, curricular development and student engagement.     Haley Roberts works alongside Dr. Sharon Tucker, Implementation Science Core director, as her project and administration coordinator.     Community Core Assistant Director

    Inga Zadvinskis is assistant director of the Community Core at the Fuld Institute for EBP. Zadvinskis earned her PhD in Nursing Science from The Ohio State University after receiving her MSN, Nurse Practitioner with a focus on adult health, primary care from Wayne State University and BSN from Michigan State. Her nursing career began with serving patients in the surgical step-down and surgical ICU settings. Zadvinskis has worked as a nurse practitioner in primary care and pre-admission testing. In her clinical educator role, she promoted evidence-based practice and the Magnet™ accreditation process. Zadvinskis has mentored teams of interprofessional staff conducting evidence-based practice projects and nursing research in hospital settings. Her dissertation work explored contributing factors to patient safety and adverse events in the hospital setting. She has numerous publications related to patient safety, safe patient handling and mobility, and health information technology. Zadvinskis is delighted to be part of the Fuld Institute for EBP interprofessional team that promotes evidence-based interventions to improve health and quality outcomes.

O'Leary is certified as an Advanced Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation. Trained as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, her current position is associate director of nursing evidence-based practice for The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center – Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute. O’Leary is widely published and has presented on a variety of oncology nursing and evidence-based practice topics locally, nationally and internationally.

    Nancy Powell is the director of professional development at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, a member of Geisinger, located in southern New Jersey. Powell‘s more than 40 years of nursing experience include nurse midwifery, nursing education and professional development.     Jeff Messinger is the statistician for the Fuld Institute for EBP. He assists with statistical analyses and data visualizations for the various research projects being conducted by the Fuld Institute for EBP. Messinger received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from The Ohio State University and his master’s degree in statistics from Miami University. Before joining the Fuld Institute for EBP in August 2021, he was a lecturer in the statistics department at Miami University.

    Arlene S. Bierman is director of AHRQ’s Center for Evidence and Practice Improvement, which consists of the Evidence-based Practice Center Program; the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force Program; the Division of Decision Science and Patient Engagement; the Division of Health Information Technology, Division of Practice Improvement and the National Center for Excellence in Primary Care Research.  Dr. Bierman is a general internist, geriatrician and health services researcher, whose work has focused on improving access, quality and outcomes of healthcare for older adults with chronic illness in disadvantaged populations. As a tenured professor, she held appointments in health policy, evaluation and management; public health; medicine and nursing at the University of Toronto, where she was the inaugural holder of the Ontario Women's Health Council Chair in Women's Health, and as a senior scientist in the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute at St. Michael's Hospital. She received her medical doctorate from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, where she was a Morehead Fellow.  She completed fellowships in outcomes research at Dartmouth Medical School, and community and preventive medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She also served as an Atlantic Philanthropies Health and Aging Policy Fellow/American Political Science Foundation Congressional Fellow.

    Alex R. Kemper will be  division chief of ambulatory pediatrics at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and professor of pediatrics at The Ohio State University College  of Medicine beginning August 1, 2017. Dr. Kemper completed his pediatric  residency training at Duke University, follo wed by combined fellowship training in health services research and medical informatics with residency training in  preventive medicine at the University of North Carolina. In 2000, Dr. Kemper joined  the faculty at the University of Michigan, where he devel oped an active research  program evaluating the delivery and outcomes of preventive services. In 2006, Dr. Kemper returned to Duke University, where he expanded his work related to  pediatric preventive services, serving as Chair of the Condition Review Work group  for the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Advisory Committee on  Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children and as a consultant to Bright  Futures. Dr. Kemper is also a member of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force. In 2011, he  joined  the executive editorial board of Pediatrics and developed a new section for  the journal focusing on quality improvement. In 2013, he was appointed deputy  editor of Pediatrics . In addition to these activities, Dr. Kemper has a long track  record of mentorship, both within his institution and in partnership with the  Academic Pediatric Association, where he serves as co - director of the Research  Scholars Program.
